What towel radiators are

A towel radiator (heated towel rail) warms the bathroom and your towels using a ladder of horizontal bars. They come in chrome, white and anthracite and are the standard choice for bathrooms and en-suites.

Electric, dual-fuel or plumbed

Three options: plumbed (runs off your central heating — only warm when the heating is on), electric (independent, warm any time, great in summer) and dual-fuel (both — central heating in winter, electric element in summer). Dual-fuel is the most flexible.

Do they heat the room?

Towel rails look elegant but often have modest heat output — fine for a small bathroom, but a larger one may need a bigger rail or an extra radiator to hit the required BTU. Always size against the room, not just the towel space. Check with the BTU calculator.

Cost & running cost

Rails are typically £60–£300; a dual-fuel kit adds a little. Running an electric element for an hour to warm towels costs pennies to a few pence, depending on wattage and tariff.

Installing

Plumbed and dual-fuel rails need a plumber (and an electrician for the element); electric-only versions just need a fused connection. Bathroom zones and IP ratings matter — use a qualified installer for anything wired.

Choosing size & fuel

Pick the fuel for how you’ll use it (dual-fuel for year-round towels), size the output to the room, and check the bar spacing suits your towels. Chrome outputs slightly less heat than painted finishes.
