What column radiators are

Column radiators use rows of vertical tubes (columns) — a classic cast-iron-style look, updated in steel. Because they hold more water and have more surface area, they put out plenty of heat and bring a timeless, period feel.

Heat output

They deliver high output for their footprint, especially in 3- and 4-column depths, which suits larger and high-ceilinged rooms that lose more heat. More columns and rows mean more BTU. Size it with the BTU calculator.

Looks & finishes

They’re a design statement as much as a heat source — traditional white, raw metal, anthracite and bold colours, horizontal or vertical. A favourite for period homes, hallways and kitchens where the radiator is on show.

Cost

Expect to pay more than a plain panel — typically £120–£400+ depending on size, depth and finish — for the extra output and the look. Cast-iron reproductions cost more again and are heavier to fit.

Best rooms

Period living rooms, hallways, kitchens and any large or high-ceilinged space needing strong, even heat with character. Their thermal mass gives a gentle, lasting warmth.

Buying tips

Check the output at your system’s flow temperature — outputs are often quoted at a hot 75°C, so a heat pump running cooler needs a bigger radiator. Confirm the wall fixings can take the weight, and add TRVs for control.
