How oil-filled radiators work
An oil-filled radiator heats a sealed reservoir of thermal oil, which spreads heat across the fins and keeps radiating after the element switches off. The oil is never burned or refilled — it’s just a heat store — giving gentle, even warmth rather than the sharp on/off of a convector.
Why people choose them
They give comfortable, lingering heat, stay warm for 30–60 minutes after cycling off (saving energy), run quietly and don’t dry the air or burn dust. That makes them a favourite for bedrooms and living rooms where steady background warmth matters.
Running costs
Like all electric heating they cost the electricity price per kWh — but the heat retention means the element cycles less, so a well-set oil-filled radiator can be a little cheaper to run than a bare convector for the same comfort. A timer and accurate thermostat are the biggest cost levers.
Oil-filled vs convector vs ceramic
Oil-filled: slow, even, retains heat — best for comfort. Convector/panel: fast and cheap to buy but heat vanishes quickly. Dry-thermal ceramic: fast and retains heat, slimmer, pricier. Pick oil-filled for cosy rooms, ceramic for speed and looks.
Best rooms
Bedrooms, living rooms, studies and any room without central heating where you want steady warmth rather than a quick blast. Less ideal where you need instant heat for five minutes then off.
What to look for
Match wattage to room size (~100W/m² as a guide) and choose a model with a digital thermostat, 24/7 timer and safety cut-outs. Castors are handy on portable models; wall-mounted slim versions save floor space.
